Biography

Joshua Martin, MD, is a board-certified Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation physician (physiatrist) with fellowship training in Sports and Regenerative Medicine. Dr. Martin is an expert at advanced non-surgical treatments for musculoskeletal pain, including for joint tendon, and nerve issues. Additionally, he is an expert in diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound, allowing an immediate, inexpensive, and accurate view of soft tissue (tendons, nerves, superficial ligaments) without the hassle and wait of an MRI. Dr. Martin also brings expertise in cutting-edge regenerative/orthobiologic medicine, which entails the use of cells, tissues, growth factors, and blood components to augment healing and recovery. Dr Martin teaches regenerative medicine at national conferences, and currently serves on the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Biologics Curriculum Committee, developing standards for teaching regenerative medicine to be used at residency and fellowship programs nationwide. He currently serves new and returning patients at Metro Orthopedics & Sports Therapy in Potomac, Maryland.

A native of the Washington D.C. area, Dr. Martin moved to Boston for his undergraduate studies, where he attended Harvard University. He graduated Magna cum laude with highest honors in neurobiology, before receiving his medical degree from Tufts University School of Medicine. Dr. Martin completed his Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation residency at the top-ranked Northwestern/Shirley Ryan AbilityLab. Afterward, Dr. Martin furthered his sports medicine training, completing the New Jersey Regenerative Institute fellowship working alongside the renowned Dr. Gerard Malanga. During his fellowship, he received extensive training in diagnostic and interventional ultrasound procedures, as well as regenerative procedures, including Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP), Microfragmented Adipose (MFAT), Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate (BMAC), Tenex, and Sonex.

Dr. Martin has provided sports coverage for various able-bodied and adaptive sports, including the Chicago marathon, the National Wheelchair Basketball Championship, the NHL Sled Classic, DC Divas football, and high school football.

Outside of work, Dr. Martin is a lifetime runner, previously captaining the Walt Whitman high school cross country and track teams. Having recovered from numerous sports injuries, he knows first-hand what it’s like to sustain these injuries and how to recover optimally. He believes in a comprehensive approach to diagnosis and treatment, listening to each patient’s goals while addressing pain, function, and injury prevention.
